Stand up to Gov. Terry Branstad and his VETO of critical water quality funding.
In the dark of night on May 30th, Governor Branstad sent an email announcing his veto of over $15 million in crucial water quality program funding:
Legislators had approved a total of $25 million for the Resource Enhancement and Protection fund, but Branstad trimmed that to $16 million. The governor said the remaining total still represented an increase of $2 million over the current fiscal year. The fund helps pay for trails, parks and other outdoor recreation opportunities The governor also cut $11.2 million in money for water quality and conservation programs under the Department of Agriculture. That action drew criticism from Agriculture Secretary Bill Northey, who is a fellow Republican.
